The Spatial Development Strategy is about more than identifying where development should take place. It provides a long-term vision for creating a more sustainable, connected and prosperous West Midlands.
By planning strategically across the region, the SDS aims to support economic growth, deliver the homes people need, improve transport connections, protect and enhance the natural environment, and ensure communities have the infrastructure they need to thrive.
The Vision will be developed collaboratively with the people who live and work across the Combined Authority area. This includes engaging with young people (aged 18–24) to ensure their perspectives help shape the future of the region. The Vision will also reflect and complement the ambitions of other regional strategies being developed by the Combined Authority. You can find out more about these below.
The priorities shaping the SDS
The Spatial Development Strategy is being developed around seven key priorities. Together, these will help shape the evidence, policies and decisions that form the final strategy.
Housing
Planning for the homes the West Midlands needs, in the right places and supported by the infrastructure that communities rely on.
Economy
Supporting investment, jobs and sustainable economic growth while strengthening the region's competitiveness.
Transport
Creating better connections between people, homes, jobs and services through an integrated transport network.
Environment
Protecting and enhancing green spaces, improving biodiversity and supporting the transition to a more sustainable region.
Health
Designing places that promote healthier lifestyles, improve wellbeing and provide access to essential services.
Essential Utilities
Planning for the energy, water, digital and other infrastructure needed to support future growth.
Design and Placemaking
Creating attractive, inclusive and well-designed places where people want to live, work and spend time.
Working alongside other regional strategies
The Spatial Development Strategy does not sit in isolation. It supports and complements a range of existing regional strategies and plans, helping to ensure investment and decision-making are joined up across the West Midlands.
West Midlands Growth Plan
Supporting sustainable economic growth, investment and employment across the region.
Local Transport Plan
Helping coordinate growth with improvements to the transport network.
Local Nature Recovery Strategy
Supporting the protection and enhancement of nature and biodiversity.
Regional Energy Strategy
Planning for the energy infrastructure needed to support future communities and businesses.
